Postdoctoral Fellow
PhD – Plant Breeding, Cornell University, 2011
BSc – Botany, University of Washington, 2004
Sarah is an NSF Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES) Postdoctoral Fellow working jointly with the Ruark lab and the Jahn research group. Coming from a background in plant genetics and molecular biology, Sarah shifted fields rather dramatically in 2011 and is now exploring regional aspects of agricultural decision-making and sustainability. Much of her work focuses on soil quality in crop – livestock systems, and fits under the overarching hypothesis that management practices geared towards building soil quality have the potential to improve the overall resilience of agricultural systems.
Specific areas of research include:
- Greenhouse gas emissions from forage-based cropping systems
- Sustainability assessment in integrated farming operations
- Soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics
